Talent in the tag team division on both WWE Raw and SmackDown Live are top notch. The Revival, Usos, New Day, The Bar, AOP can regularly wrestle in great matches on WWE.
Tag-Team wrestling has been a staple in the WWE since the 1980s. They were an important part of the product and were often put in the undercard of the shows. It had a boom when the Rockers (Marty Jannetty and Shawn Michaels) were getting famous while the Road Warriors were killing it in the World Championship Wrestling (WCW). But it reached its pinnacle when three teams from WWE proved that tag team wrestling can be the highlight of the shows.
The Dudley Boys, Edge and Christian and The Hardy Boyz were one of the hottest wrestlers in the early 2000s due to their brutal and intense matches. They were constantly taking ultimate risks and doing innovative moves that the crowd started to take a liking to tag teams. They were involved in making the Table, Ladders and Chairs match a hit among the fans. That period is often considered as the golden period in tag team wrestling. Edge and Jeff Hardy went on to become huge singles stars while Matt Hardy and Christian also had success.

But Edge has revealed that WWE boss Vince McMahon was never a fan of tag team wrestling. On his E&C’s Pod of Awesomeness podcast, Edge said that tag teams were never a priority for WWE even during the boom period.
“To be honest I don’t know how much Vince will ever focus on tag team wrestling because I don’t think he sees much in it. There can be, we’ve proven there can be. The Rock n Roll Express has proven there can be and the Hardys and the Dudleys and the Road Warriors and there’s a lot of instances that have proven that tag team wrestling and I know Steve Austin would be the first one to throw his hat in this ring. Tag team wrestling can be the best match on the show bar-none,” Edge said.
For the past one 2 years, tag team wrestling has again become an important part of the shows. Teams like Sheamus and Cesaro, The Usos, New Day and The Shield have participated in great matches over the past year. Even in NXT, The Revival, AOP, DIY and Undisputed Era have been involved in phenomenal tag team matches. New Day and Usos match in the Hell in a Cell last year has been hailed by both critics and fans. WWE Hall of Famer Edge believes that the company never plans on tag teams getting famous but it is the calibres of the wrestlers that make these teams get over with the crowd.
“Especially when it’s done by two guys like that and they have the right opponents it can be a magical, magical within this industry. You can tell a different type of story with more than just two people and I don’t think Vince has ever seen it that way. I think any time tag team wrestling has made any headway on the show it’s happened almost by accident or without anybody realizing that it’s happening,” Egde concluded.
