What Should Be The Slope of the Gutter?

ServicesWhat Should Be The Slope of the Gutter?

The drainage system is an integral part of any residential building. It drains precipitation, protecting the facade and roof from the harmful effects of moisture. Proper installation of the drainage system will extend the life of the premises and will save on repair and restoration work. This should be done by a specialist who knows all the intricacies of installation, but the work of a professional costs a significant amount. When performing the work yourself, it is necessary to follow certain rules and comply with the requirements for the slope of the gutter. Then the system will really effectively perform the stated functions.

Drainage system design

To prevent meltwater and rainwater from destroying the foundation and facade, drainage systems are installed on houses. The entire structure consists of two parts:

  • horizontal – these are gutters that absorb liquid;
  • vertical – pipes through which liquid flows downwards.

At first glance, everything looks simple: modern plastic systems fit together like a puzzle, but the components must be attached at a specific angle. If the angle is incorrect, water will stagnate. This will cause the entire system to fail.

Features of installing a drainage system

The installation of the gutter should be carried out after the facade work is completed, but the roof still has no finish coating. The shape and design of the gutter systems should be chosen depending on the frequency and intensity of precipitation so that water does not spill over the edge of the trays. The wider they are, the more precipitation they can remove.

The plastic system must be installed at a temperature of +5 and above. The slope must be directed towards the gutter spout. The maximum permissible distance between the spouts is 12 meters.

What should be the slope for the gutter?

The instructions indicate the recommended slope value. For convenience, centimeters are used. This is usually 2-3 cm per 10 meters of gutter.

First, you need to install a support for the gutters at the lowest and highest points at least 20 cm from the edge. All other holders are attached between them. In order to mark the placement of the fasteners in the intermediate part, a taut rope is used. The distance between the brackets should not exceed half a meter.

Consequences of incorrectly set external gutter slope angle

Developers and contractors do not always comply with drainage slope requirements. Failure to comply with the rules leads to the following consequences:

  • water can overflow the gutters and significantly wet the walls of the building. If this problem is repeated many times, the walls become damp, which leads to the appearance of mold and fungi inside the room;
  • water may overflow through the funnel due to an incorrectly selected pipe diameter;
  • accumulation of garbage and leaves, which provokes stagnation of water in the gutters, which will lead to clogging of the entire system.

The above information suggests a conclusion: installing and securing a gutter system is not difficult. However, you should follow the rules governing the height/angle of the gutters.

Before installation, you also need to choose the right pipe diameter and the required gutter width. And the best solution would be to contact specialized specialists who have all the necessary equipment to perform responsible work.
